Necchi launched the Supernova in 1953 and it won the Compasso d'Oro, Italy's top design prize. Italian sources call it the first product to marry new technology with advanced design, a little automatic workshop thanks to its mechanical memories, which are the cams. Open the cover on top of the arm and you can swap the cams to change patterns, and it sews with a twin needle too. The motor is built into the arm and drives the handwheel by a belt, and a transformer runs the light at 12 volts and gives the motor two speeds. The Lidia of 1955 and the Mirella of 1956 followed, and the Mirella is in MoMA's collection. Ask which cams come with a Supernova, because the patterns live in them.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
The service manual's common complaints are a sluggish or overheating motor, worn brushes and a slipping belt. Missing cams limit it to plain stitches.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Supernova sold with its original cam and accessory kit and case at $290 delivered, because the patterns live in the cams and plenty of machines come without them. There are at least 23 for sale, and most complete ones ask $270–500 delivered. If you'd rather see it run first, the BU Supernova titled runs, with a video, case and pedal, is $315 delivered. On any of them, ask for a photo of the cams under the top cover and a video at both speeds, since a sluggish or hot motor and a slipping belt are the usual complaints. Skip the 1955 machine whose $631 shipping brings it to $931 delivered, and the zero-feedback listing whose photo is a phone screenshot.

The lowest delivered complete Supernova here, a BU Supernova with a two-tone case and pedal at $280 with free shipping. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a video at both speeds and a photo of the cams under the top cover.
