Husqvarna started as a royal arms factory in Huskvarna, Sweden, in 1689, and in 1872 its board decided to make sewing machines, because rifle orders had fallen and the gun-making machinery suited the work. The vintage machines were made there and sold in the US under the Viking name. Husqvarna gave its 1960 Model 2000 color-coded settings, introduced snap-on presser feet in 1972, called its 1979 6680 the computer sewing machine, and launched the touch-screen Designer I in 1998. The sewing business passed to VSM Group in 1997 and now shares an owner with Singer and Pfaff. The 1970s cam machines use plastic gears inside, so service history matters.
