Singer · Straight stitch · 1911 to the late 1950s or early 1960s
Singer introduced the 99 in 1911 as a three-quarter-size version of its full-size Class 66, lighter and easier to carry at about 22 pounds. From 1921 it could have an electric belt motor, which made it one of the first portable electric machines, and plenty were sold as hand cranks too. Scotland built the 99K for decades, and the US 99-13 and 99-31 came out of Elizabethport. It sews a straight stitch on an oscillating hook, and the 99K-31 adds reverse. It has to sit in its base, because the mechanism under the bed won't let it sit flat on a table. When it was replaced by the 185 in 1958, Singer kept the same mechanism. UK machines often run on 220–240V, so read the motor plate before you buy.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
Missing bases and worn or slipping belts are the usual problems, along with old wiring on electric versions. Many on US eBay are UK machines with 220–240V motors.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1926 Model 99 in its bentwood case with the key and knee control, titled working, at $183 delivered from a 100% seller. That's inside the $160–270 delivered band most complete 99s ask, and with at least 121 for sale there's no need to stretch. The 1920s 99s in bentwood cases run from a knee control and the 1950s 99Ks mostly have a foot pedal, and a UK-built one may have a 220–240 V motor, so read the plate. Check it sits in its base or case, since it can't sit flat on a table, and look at every cord in the photos, because several 99s for sale are titled needs rewire. Skip the 1951 Centennial hand crank at $497 delivered, more than twice the median.
