The 530 was the first Bernina Record, launched in 1954 at the family factory in Steckborn, Switzerland, and it brought two things Bernina still uses. One is the patented clip-on presser foot invented by Fritz Gegauf, and the other is the semi-automatic buttonhole. It's a free-arm zigzag with an automatic ornamental-stitch device, so its built-in cams give you 12 practical and decorative stitches. The motor sits at the back under a cover. On knee-operated machines the knee lever sets the speed, and you lift the foot with a lever at the back of the head. It takes the engraved two-prong feet and the white-label A feet Bernina still sells, so finding accessories is easy. Check the motor brushes have life left, since Bernina's guarantee treated them as a wear part.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
Worn motor brushes are the documented wear part, and old oil makes the mechanism sluggish. Listings often lack the knee lever or foot control that sets the speed.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Record 530 titled tested, with its case and accessories box, at $400 delivered, the bottom of the $400–650 band most complete 530s ask. There are at least 10 for sale, and price follows what comes in the case more than the machine's age. Check the photos for the knee lever or foot control, since on knee-operated 530s the knee lever is the only speed control, and ask for a video running slow and fast, because sparking or stuttering points to worn motor brushes. Skip the $201 machine titled machine only unless you already own a speed control, and the untested one at $439, which asks more than the tested machine.
