The 830 Record was Bernina's top machine for eleven years, made in Steckborn from 1971, and Wikipedia calls the 830 class the best seller of all its models. It was the first Bernina with an electronic foot control and the first of its line with a five-step automatic buttonhole. Inside is a stack of about 20 cams you choose with two levers, a front-loading Bernina CB hook and a knee lifter, and Wikipedia notes they were popular with schools and costume departments. Later machines became the 830 Record Electronic, with needle positioning from the foot control. Bernina reused the name decades later for a computerized embroidery machine, the B 830, so search for 830 Record to keep the two apart. Like the 730, it has nylon gears that can crack.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
The nylon cam and vertical shaft gears crack, and later machines have plastic covers that yellow and go brittle. The type 290 foot control on later 830s breaks its clips and carbon pins.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 830 Record titled tested and working with its hard case, cords and pedal at $497 delivered, under the $550–750 band most complete 830s ask. There are at least 15 for sale, and the case, extension table and feet move the price more than anything else in the titles. Like the 730, the 830 has a nylon cam gear that cracks, so ask any seller for a video sewing several cam patterns and running slow and fast from the foot control. Check the photos show 830 Record on the machine with levers, not the modern B 830 embroidery machine. Skip the listing whose first photo is a screenshot of another eBay listing, and the zero-feedback one that shows only a case and a guide.
