Kenmore 158 isn't one machine. The 158 is the Sears source code at the front of model numbers like 158.1774 and 158.1931, and it covers a long run of Japanese-built machines. In 1957 Maruzen, which later became Jaguar, signed a long-term contract with Sears, and the 158 manuals are printed in Japan. Earlier Kenmores built by White carry the 117 prefix instead. The range runs from heavy straight and zigzag heads that take plastic pattern discs to free-arm machines with stretch stitches and design cams. Some have an external belt motor behind the head, and the presser-bar height varies by model, so check the feet match. Look up the full model number on the plate before you buy, because it tells you which cams, discs and feet it needs.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
Missing cams or pattern discs are the common problem, since many 158s can't sew decorative stitches without them. Belts slip on external-motor models, and generic feet often don't fit the shank.
