The 6440 is one of Husqvarna's 6000-series machines from the mid-1970s, sold in the US as a Viking and abroad as the Husqvarna 2000. Owners call it the Colormatic. You set a stitch by turning the selector, width and length dials to matching colored symbols, and you get more patterns by plugging cams into a socket at the back. It's mechanical, with no circuit board in the stitch selection. Collectors like the low gear, which lets it sew stitch by stitch at full power, and the Viking vertical hook loads its bobbin from the front of the free arm. The weak spots are plastic. Husqvarna used acetal and nylon gears in the pattern mechanism, and the original lubricant hardens until the machine freezes. Budget for a service unless the seller can show it sewing.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
The original lubricant turns to glue and freezes the machine, and repairers often find a cracked internal cam gear. Cam prongs, the cam socket and the take-up bushing break, and a broken handwheel is no longer available new.
