Pfaff · Zigzag · 1930s to the 1950s (Pfaff dates it to 1932)
Georg Michael Pfaff founded his company in Kaiserslautern in 1862, and Pfaff's own timeline dates the 130 zigzag to 1932. It was the household zigzag in Pfaff's line between the straight-stitch 30 and the later 230, and German sources have it in production into the 1950s. It's a heavy, belt-driven machine. The manual walks you through buttonholes, sewing on buttons, eyelets and hemstitching, all done with the zigzag, and speed comes from a knee control or, on some portables, a foot control. Pfaff told owners to use its 130R needles. You'll see them in cabinets and in portable cases. Check the motor belt and the bobbin case, and ask whether it's been cleaned out.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
A loose or over-tight motor belt and lint packed in the hook race and tension discs are what the manual warns about. Old oil makes it run heavy after years unused.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
We'd buy the portable 130 titled runs great, in its original case, at $349 delivered. There are at least 19 for sale, and most complete ones ask $300–480 delivered, with price following whether the case and a pedal come along. These are heavy belt-driven machines, so ask for a video of the motor running slow with the handwheel keeping up, which shows the belt isn't slipping, and a photo of the bobbin case out of the hook. Pass on the $120 head with free shipping, whose photo shows a 131 badge, not 130, and no pedal. Skip the restored machine from Greece at $1,190 delivered, about three times the median, unless you want a restorer's finish, and read the voltage plate on anything imported.

The lowest delivered complete 130 here, a 1950s machine with its case and pedal at $281. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a video of the handwheel turned by hand and a full-width zigzag on scrap.
