Bernina launched the 930 in 1982 as its first machine with stretch stitches, and Bernina USA says it was the workhorse its industrial machine was based on. The 900 series brought a squarer metal body with the motor built in. Stitch selection is still mechanical, but a DC motor with electronic speed control keeps its punching power even at a crawl. When you stop, the needle rises to the top, and a tap of your heel on the foot control sends it down. The knee lifter raises the foot and drops the feed dogs at the same time. It's the last Bernina the old engraved feet fit. The manual says to bring a machine in from a cold room an hour before sewing so the oil can loosen, so don't judge a stiff wheel on a cold day.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
Owners report jams in old machines where the part is no longer supported by Bernina. A cold machine runs stiff until the oil warms, which isn't a fault.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 930 Record Electronic titled working, clean and tested at $880 delivered, under the $983 median of the $750–1,150 band. There are at least 16 for sale. The pro-serviced machine at $1,698 is the one to buy if you want a rebuilt board and a warranty, and the untested one at $430 is a gamble on the electronics. On any 930, ask for a video of the needle stopping up and dropping on a heel tap, a slow seam through thick fabric, and the knee lifter dropping the feed dogs. Skip the tested machine at $1,555 delivered, which asks nearly the serviced machine's price without the service.
$715.99est. delivered
The lowest delivered 930 not titled untested, at $716 with its carry case, pedal and extension table. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a video of the needle stopping up and going down on a heel tap.
