When Husqvarna Viking launched the Designer I in 1998, it was one of the first home machines with a color touch screen. It sews and embroiders, and it brought Sensor Foot Lift, Sensor Foot Pressure, selective thread cutters and a built-in disk drive. Under the plastic is a big die-cast aluminium frame, with stepper motors moving the needle swing, the feed, the side-to-side feed and the presser foot. Original machines load designs from a 3.5-inch floppy disk, and a later Designer I USB version swapped in a USB port. The embroidery unit and its hoops come off the side, so a listing without them is a sewing machine only. These are electronics now 25 years old, so the screen and the drive are what to test before you pay.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
Touch screens stop responding or need recalibrating, and floppy drives stop reading disks. Thread and buttonhole sensors act up when dirty, and the embroidery unit, hoops and disks often go missing.

For a Designer I that sews and embroiders, we'd start with the $479 delivered one titled with its embroidery arm and foot pedal, inside the $400–625 delivered band. There are at least 32 for sale, and the embroidery unit and hoops move the price most, since a listing without them is a sewing machine only. The one titled professionally serviced asks $569 delivered, and the cheapest is $225 with free shipping but says nothing about the unit or testing. On any of them, ask for a video tapping through the touch screen and loading a design from the disk drive. Skip the $1,543 delivered one, which asks about three times the band median with only a foot pedal in the title.
