Brother · Serger · On Brother's US site since at least 2008
The 1034D is Brother's 3 and 4-thread serger, and it's been on Brother's US site since at least 2008. It runs at up to 1,300 stitches a minute with color-coded threading, a differential feed for knits and gathering, and a rolled hem you set by converting the machine. It weighs about 13 pounds and plugs into a household outlet. In the box you get standard, blind-stitch and gathering feet, a trim trap and four spools of thread, and Brother published a use-and-care book of serger techniques for it. Ask for a stitch sample before you buy, since most problems show up in the stitch.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
We couldn't source faults specific to the 1034D. Check it like any serger, for sharp knives, balanced stitches, a working rolled-hem conversion and the feet and trim trap that came with it.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1034D titled with its foot pedal, accessories and travel case at $225 delivered, at the bottom of the $220–320 delivered band, from a 99.8% seller. There are at least 49 for sale, and used ones mostly ask $216–310 delivered, so there's little reason to pay more for one. Look for the foot control and power cord in the photos, since several are sold without one, and ask for a sample of a balanced 4-thread overlock and a video of the knives cutting two layers. Skip the $540 listing, which asks nearly twice the band median from a 97.5% seller with a stock photo.
