JUKI · Serger · On JUKI's US site since at least 2011; now the MO-654DEN
The MO-654DE is JUKI's household four-thread serger, sold today as the MO-654DEN. It sews 2, 3 and 4-thread overlock, a narrow overlock, a 3-thread flatlock and a rolled hem, and its differential feed runs from 0.7 to 2.0, so it can stretch or gather as it sews. It runs at up to 1,500 stitches a minute and weighs about 7 kilograms. JUKI color-codes the threading, gives it industrial-style tension dials and a lower-looper threader, and includes a 2/3-thread converter. Both knives can be replaced by the owner. It's a household machine, despite JUKI's industrial reputation, and it takes ordinary 130/705H needles. On a used one, check the knives, the converter and the looper threading before anything else.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
Dull or chipped knives and a missing 2/3-thread converter are the usual gaps.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
There's one MO-654DE for sale right now, so its $158 ask with free shipping isn't a market read. It's titled untested and sold without the foot control or power cord, so you can't know whether it serges until you've found both. If you take a chance on it, ask for a video of the handwheel turning and photos of the knives and the 2/3-thread converter, and price in a JUKI foot control and cord.
