JUKI sells the TL-2010Q as a semi-professional machine, a portable straight stitcher for quilting, tailoring, apparel and home decor. It plugs into a household outlet and its manual says it's for household use, but it sews a straight stitch at up to 1,500 stitches a minute on an aluminium die-cast body with an 8.5 by 6 inch arm. It trims the thread automatically, using a mechanism JUKI says matches its industrial machines, and it has a needle threader, needle up and down, a knee lifter and an extension table. The bobbin case is a JUKI-only part. It takes household flat-shank needles, HAx1 or HLx5, not industrial ones. JUKI says to oil it every day you use it, so ask how it's been kept.

Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
What to check
The manual's troubleshooting points to a grooved bobbin-case spring, a scratched needle hole, and noise from dust, a dry machine or the wrong oil. The JUKI bobbin case, knee lifter and table often go missing.
01Bobbin case: Ask for a photo of the bobbin case out of the machine. It should be the JUKI case with a smooth, ungrooved spring.
02Running: Ask for a video running at full speed. It should sound even, and a loud or rough machine needs cleaning and oil.
03Trimmer: Ask the seller to sew a seam and trim with the pedal. The thread should cut cleanly every time.
04Throat plate: Zoom in on the needle hole in the photos. It should be smooth with no scratches or burrs.
05Accessories: Check the knee lifter and extension table are included. Both are standard with the machine.
06Needles: Ask what needles have been used. It wants HAx1 or HLx5, never industrial DBx1.
We'd buy the open-box TL-2010Q at $959 with free shipping, $240 under the cheapest sealed new one, if you're comfortable with a 98.7% dealer. There are at least 11 for sale, and almost all are new dealer stock at $1,199–1,239 delivered, which sets the $1,225–1,300 band. Only two used machines are listed, and both come on Grace quilting frames, one at $1,279 delivered from a 100% seller and one at $1,099 with no shipping quoted from a zero-feedback account. A used one should ask well under new, so ask how much it's been used, for a video of the thread trimmer cutting, and for a photo of the JUKI bobbin case and knee lifter. Skip the $1,683 listing, which asks about $440 more than other dealers for the same new machine.
