Brother PQ1500SL
Brother sold the PQ1500SL as a sewing and quilting machine that does one thing fast, a straight stitch at up to 1,500 stitches a minute. It grew out of the PQ1500S, which was on Brother's US site by 2007, and the SL swapped the old 15 watt bulb for LED lighting. It plugs into a household outlet and has an automatic thread cutter, a needle threader, a knee lifter, and a pin feed that works with the feed dogs to stop layers creeping. The work space is 5.7 by 8.6 inches and the machine weighs about 24 pounds. Brother has now discontinued it, so every one you'll find is used. It takes HLx5 needles, and generic feet can hit the feed pin, so make sure its own feet come with it.
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
What to check
Missing original feet, feed pin parts and knee lifters are the common gaps. The machine needs regular oiling, and the manual's first answer to noise or binding is a dry machine.
01Feet: Check the original Brother feet are included. Generic feet can hit the feed pin.
02Pin feed: Ask for the feed pin and its changer in the photos. Both are listed accessories.
03Oil: Ask when it was last oiled. It needs oil at the marked points, and a dry machine runs loud.
04Thread cutter: Ask for a video using the thread cutter. It should cut both threads cleanly.
05Knee lifter: Check the knee lifter is included. It should lift the foot smoothly.
06Test seam: Ask for a video sewing a quilt sandwich at speed. The layers should come out even with no skipped stitches.
With only two listings, there's no market read for the PQ1500SL here. The one standalone machine is a PQ1500S, the earlier version with a bulb light, at $261 delivered from a 100% seller, and it isn't titled tested. Brother has discontinued the line, so ask for a video of the thread cutter and a quilt sandwich sewn at speed, and check that the original Brother feet, the feed pin and the knee lifter are in the photos. The other is a setup on a 5 ft quilting frame at $1,000 from a zero-feedback account with no shipping quoted, so treat it as pickup and pay only through eBay checkout.
