JUKI built its first industrial sewing machine in 1953, and in 1969 it put a reliable automatic thread trimmer into an industrial lockstitch, which JUKI calls a stepping stone to the world's top market share. The DDL-5550 is one of its single-needle straight stitchers, and JUKI still sells it as the DDL-5550N, with a -7 version that trims the thread. It sews up to 5,500 stitches a minute on medium fabrics, lifts the foot 13 mm with the knee, and oils itself from a pan under the table, hook included. Light and heavy subclasses take smaller or bigger needles. What you're really buying is a rig, with the head, a table, an oil pan, a motor and the pedal linkage. Older ones often have clutch motors, which hum whenever they're switched on, and may need 220V or 3-phase power.
Separate table motor: clutch on many older rigs, servo on newer ones
Power
Single-phase 100–120V or 200–240V, or 3-phase 200–240V, depending on the motor
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
What to check
Rigs arrive missing the oil pan, knee lifter or pedal linkage, and clutch motors may be 3-phase or 220V. A machine left dry or stored for years needs fresh oil and a run-in before work.
01Motor plate: Ask for a photo of the motor's plate. Single-phase at your voltage plugs in at home, and 3-phase needs a shop supply or a new motor.
02Clutch or servo: Ask which motor it has and for a video of it idling. A servo is silent at rest, and a clutch motor spins and hums the whole time it's on.
03Oil: Ask for a photo of the oil level in the pan and a video of it running. Oil should splash in the sight window.
04Complete rig: Check the photos show the table, oil pan, knee lifter, pedal linkage, belt cover and thread stand. A head alone needs all of these.
05Test seam: Ask for a video sewing your kind of fabric at speed. The stitch should be tight and even with no skips.
06Collection: Plan to collect it or arrange freight. With the table and motor it's a two-person lift.
We'd start with the $590 DDL-5550 titled with its table, motor, lamp and thread stand, from a 100% seller, since it has the parts a head alone lacks at about half the band median. There are at least 35 for sale and most quote no shipping, asking $200–900 before freight, so the $1,075–1,375 band comes from the five with shipping quoted and reads high. Ask for a photo of the motor plate (single-phase at your voltage, not 3-phase) and a video of it running with oil splashing in the sight window, and plan to collect it, since JUKI lists the DDL-5550N at 81 kg total. Skip the 3-phase 200V rig shipping from Japan at $1,362, which won't run on a house outlet, and the copied "Made In Japan. 1/2 Hp" listings from zero-feedback accounts at $500–550.
