JUKI · Industrial · Current model
JUKI calls the DDL-8700 the standard model of its single-needle lockstitch machines. It sews up to 5,500 stitches a minute on medium fabrics, with light A and heavy H versions, and the head alone weighs 28 kilograms. It oils itself from a pan under the table, and JUKI says to check that oil splashes in the sight window while it runs. The -7 version adds an automatic thread trimmer, which needs its own control box and panel. Current machines ship with JUKI's compact servo motor, which is quiet at rest. Older rigs often have a clutch motor that spins whenever it's on. After setup or long storage, JUKI says to run it for about ten minutes to break it in.
Under the throat plate
Ask for a photo under the slide plate with the bobbin case in place. A missing bobbin case or the wrong needle system is the most common reason a machine that looks fine won’t sew.
Used rigs often lack oil pans, knee lifters or pedal linkage, and on -7 machines the control box and panel the trimmer needs. A machine stored dry needs fresh oil and a run-in.
New to old machines? How to check a used sewing machine walks through the handwheel, the wiring, the bobbin case and a test seam.
Buying guide
New complete DDL-8700 sets with a servo motor and table ask $1,002 to $1,199 from dealers, and we'd buy the $1,002 delivered one. Used rigs here ask about the same, $1,050 for an assembled one in Philadelphia with no shipping quoted, so a used DDL-8700 only makes sense well under $1,000 and close enough to collect. There are at least 40 for sale, and the $1,025–1,600 delivered band is set mostly by new dealer stock, with heads alone from $776 delivered that still need a table, motor, belt and bobbin winder. Ask for a photo of the motor plate (3-phase won't run at home) and a video with oil splashing in the sight window, and skip the zero-feedback listing that shares another seller's title.
